Where does your loyalty lie?

We’ve all heard “It’s not personal, it’s business.”  But if what you put all of you energy into for a minimum of 40 hours a week isn’t personal, I don’t know what is.  This separating emotion and business is something I have always struggled with.

Recently Lauren Fernandez posted “Passion Isn’t an Emotion in the Biz World” (side note- follow her, she is great).  Here she discusses the struggle of removing emotions from business.  I would love to say that I can do this no problem, but I would be lying.  I am not saying that I am a cry baby that doesn’t know how to handle criticism but I do take pride in my work.  I am passionate about it. This passion and emotion that comes with your job often translates into loyalty. I am talking about the loyalty you have to your co-workers and company.   This loyalty is what gets you out of bed and working so hard every day.

What happens when this loyalty is tampered with? A good example of this is the re-positioning of the company or changes in management and they are not necessarily good for you.  Changes like this make you question the loyalty you have built everyday when go to work.  So now, where do your loyalties lie- with your personal agenda or with the company that you love?

An important lesson I learned (and was reminded of recently) is that no one is going to do your job for you.   If you want something out of work or life, it is up to you to get it done.  I am not saying this is easy but sometimes you have to step back and abandon your loyalty to get what you need done.

Work hard, never give up your passion for work and remember to stay true to your goals, even if it means abandoning the loyalty you built.
